ABOUT B-ROLL

WHO WE ARE

B-Roll Media & Arts Inc. (B-Roll), is a Maryland state-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We were established to provide free-of-cost media & arts training and education to underserved youth ages 13 through 21, as well as to youth with learning challenges or Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs). Participants in our program receive qualified, comprehensive, and applied experience with film, television, audio engineering, photography, art, and music from in-house and at-large staff members.

B-Roll works with DMV (DC-MD-VA) communities and the local school systems to identify and recruit participants who would most benefit from our programs.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

  • We believe that traditional education is not designed to accommodate non-traditional learners.

  • We believe there is a need to flip the script on education, building a student-centered plan for learning through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) media and arts programs.

  • We believe that we can redirect the lives of young people who struggle to succeed with traditional education, focusing on positive activities that lead to a stable and economically secure future.

WHAT WE DO

  • We identify and recruit youth from area schools, recreational and rehabilitation programs, and churches who will benefit from the B-Roll program.

  • We ensure that each participant is fully engaged in the instruction and promotion of media and performing arts.

  • We support each young person in the program with relevant programs, technology, mentors, and the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge, and confidence.

  • We hire and manage staff who understand the needs of B-Roll participants and have the capacity to engage them, develop relationships with community leaders, and be in tune with the issues impacting young people today.

  • We establish B-Roll as a credible resource for supporting youth in local communities.

HOW WE DO IT

B-Roll participants are taught and mentored by media arts industry experts with years of experience in radio, television, filmmaking, photography, and fine arts with the goal of guiding each individual toward career paths that will support his or her lifestyle while encouraging personal growth. And because B-Roll’s programs are available at no cost, there is no financial barrier to participation.

WHO WE SERVE

B-Roll Media & Arts serves under-resourced youth ages 13-21 and youth with diagnosed learning challenges.

50% fall into both categories: 75% are African American, 60% are male and 40% are female, 75% are under the age of 18, and 10% identify as LGBTQ+.

OUR RESULTS

Since B-Roll’s inception in 2012, we have trained more than 350 students. One hundred percent of the youth we have identified as potential beneficiaries and who have enrolled in the program have finished successfully. More than 10 percent go on to higher education or further studies in the arts and media field. Seven percent of those who complete the training get jobs or internships based on the B-Roll work they have produced.
